Background
Esp@cenet is a web-based search and retrieval system, primarily intended for the broad public, and offering access to world-wide patent information on the internet. Although designed to look and behave as one homogeneous system, Esp@cenet has two different levels of data:
Level 1: a local collection held by National Office that contains bibliographic data, and when available the complete scanned image of the most recently published national patent documents.
Level 2: world wide collection held at the EPO that contains bibliographic data and full text file in English as well as original documents scanned.
Description of the duties:
The holder of this position will interact closely with other EPO Departments: Documentation Department, Esp@cenet development team, Network team and, of course, people from National Offices.
The resulting main duties will be to:
- to deploy and test in-house Esp@cenet servers Level 1 under EPTOS (Linux)
- to assist/prepare the migration of existing servers to a new versions
- to deploy and localize new Esp@cenet servers Level 1 under EPTOS
- to qualify data extracted for National Offices and give assistance if required on data capture and data conversion (using a converter application so called “IP-CONV”).
- to monitor the Esp@cenet servers Level 1
- to train on the localisation and maintenance of Esp@cenet National Office’’s operators
Kennis en ervaring met:

The candidate for this post will have sound knowledge of:
- Linux / Unix
- Web / Application servers (Apache Tomcat)
- how to specify changes
- Other beneficial skills: search engine knowledge
especially in Verity K2.
The ideal candidate will have very good communication skills and the ability to diagnose and report problems quickly.
Due to the international nature of the organisation and the implementation of the system in different countries, the successful candidate should:
- have the ability to speak and write fluently in English,
knowledge of a language other than English would be
helpful (French, German, etc)
- be able to co-operate in a multi-cultural environment
- be highly organized, motivated and capable of working on
multiple tasks at the same time
