The Candidate
We are looking for a highly experienced and broadly skilled individual who can demonstrate a strong history of work and achievement in a Windows Server environment third line support roll, but not necessarily an infrastructure specialist, that is, not DNS, AD or Exchange etc but more in the direction of a varied application server setting.
The emphasis here is on relevant experience, not just qualifications, therefore somebody might be able to show a whole raft of industry certifications but, although this might be useful from a technology understanding perspective, it is by no means as a good measure of whether he or she can really perform in the real world.
The Job
The requirement is to perform baseline or project tasks this includes helping to maintain the health of our server park of some 1000+ MS Windows Servers most of which are Windows Server 2003. The activities will also include building new and decommissioning old servers and generally monitoring the environment spread almost equally over our data centres in Zeist and London.
On the whole the position is based in Utrecht with the occasional requirement to travel to Zeist either as an unscheduled visit or possibly as part of a rota, something in the order of 1 day per month. This will fit in with any need to have a physical presence in the data centre itself.
We work a semi shift pattern in Utrecht that means that any candidate must be able to do any of the following:
7:00 to 15:30 (Expected 1 week per month in usual circumstances)
8:00 to 16:30
9:00 to 17:30 (Usual working day if not scheduled for either of the above 2)
Additionally we work a 24 hour standby rota meaning that for approximately 1 week per month this person will have to carry a specific ‘on-call’ mobile phone. For this reason the candidate also needs to have an ADSL Internet connection, or equivalent, to be able to connect to the RI network.

We are also interested in other technical knowledge of software running on the Windows Server platforms since, as mentioned previously, our environment is very diverse including ‘off the shelf’ as well as in-house software.
Skills and Knowledge (non Technical)
In general somebody moving into this role must be a good communicator in English and Dutch.
We are looking for somebody that is able to look at the ‘big picture’ when dealing with systems to be able to see or investigate the impact of his or her actions on the whole environment. Here it is also important for the candidate to have good analytical and investigative skills to be able to understand and deal with incidents and problems with a minimum of issue and a maximum of clarity. There will also be a strong emphasis on awareness of everything going on throughout our environment to ensure that risk is mitigated by proactive analysis and careful planning.
As a general principal it should be remembered that we are dealing with quite a large environment where the financial impact of system failure could be huge, therefore anybody working in our team must be familiar with environments where such things as ITIL or other change control mechanisms are used. It is also useful if any candidate has previous working experience in a banking environment.
Team members are encouraged to actively plan out their day with careful time management and ally this with a ‘can do’ attitude toward everything they are asked to do. To these ends it is expected that any member of our team can plan, carry out and communicate their activities without micro management.
Personal
We are looking for people, as mentioned, that are good communicators both verbal and written particularly in English since many of the functions within RI are only hosted in the UK. To these ends we also would like to encourage a feeling of co-operation and helpfulness within the Windows server team and toward other groups.
It is expected that in the workplace everybody has a generally smart appearance as specified in the RI dress code guidelines.
There is no doubt that at times the environment within RI can be highly pressurised, therefore it is also important that members of our team should be able to deal with such pressures and be relied on to maintain the highest standards of workmanship in order to deliver the necessary results.
It is essential that anybody coming into the team is able to get to the Utrecht office, and the Zeist data centre, quickly and efficiently either by proximity or personal transport.
